A highlight – unnoticed by many – for the Southern Kings this past weekend was the fine performance by lock forward Bobby De Wee in their GUINESSPRO14 Championship clash against Dragons. Included in Coach Deon Davids’ starting XV for the first time this season, De Wee turned in a tough and committed display that saw him make a total of 22 tackles during the match – a stat that saw him share top spot with Josh MacLeod from Scarlets on the official Opta Top Performers list for “Most Tackles Made” in round 5 of GUINNESSPRO14 action. De Wee’s 2 lineout steals during the match also saw him take top spot on the Opta Top Performers list for “Most Lineout Steals” in round 5.
Prior to the match Coach Davids had challenged the new faces in his run-on XV to make the most of the opportunity they were being given and he certainly received an extremely positive response from the 23 year-old De Wee. Previously with the Golden Lions this is DeWee’s first season with the Southern Kings and by putting his hand up against the Dragons he has probably given his coach a bit of a selection headache when it comes to choosing his team to take on Benetton Treviso this weekend. It’s a problem Davids probably won’t mind too much though as it gives him the assurance of more depth amongst his locks.
“Bobby has been working hard at training and kept a positive attitude. I am pleased for him and was very happy with his efforts against the Dragons. It’s exactly what you want to see from a player who has had to be patient for a while and wait for his chance,” said Coach Davids
The Guinness PRO14 Championship is made up of 14 clubs – four Irish, four Welsh, two Scottish, two Italian and (for the first time this season) two South African teams in the Kings and the Toyota Cheetahs – who compete in two conferences to reach the Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.
The Kings’ next match is against Benetton Treviso this Saturday and kicks off at 20h00, SA time. It will be broadcast live on Channel 201 on Supersport – official broadcast partners of GUINNESSPRO14 rugby.
