Southern Kings speedster, Alshaun Bock, will become one of the oldest players to make their Vodacom Super Rugby debut when his team takes on the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

The 34-year-old was selected for the first time this season in the Southern Kings team after joining the team late last year, following an impressive showing in the Currie Cup competition for the Griquas.

After years of waiting to make his dream a reality, Bock is eager to run onto the field in Southern Kings colours on Saturday.

“I always dreamt of playing Vodacom Super Rugby, but I never thought it would come true this year,” Bock admitted.

“I had a good Currie Cup season with the Griquas and things fell into place after that.

“There were some difficult times. There was a two-year break where I didn’t play any rugby. SWD Eagles offered me a contract again where I played for three years and moved to Griquas. Suddenly a Vodacom Super Rugby opportunity came, and I take it with both hands.”

Despite his age, Bock remains one of the quickest players in the Southern Kings team. His partnership with fellow winger Makazole Mapimpi will undoubtedly form one of the quickest wing pairings in the competition.

The winger admits to feeling a lot younger than his age and intends on turning back the hands of time on the field.

“I turn 35 in May, but I feel as young as I was 10 years ago. The speed is still there, and it is just a privilege and honour to put on the Southern Kings jersey,” Bock said.

“I’m just going to take it easy. I’m looking forward to it, and I want to contribute to the Southern Kings – that is the most important thing.”

Bock made his provincial debut at the age of 19 in 2002 for Boland.

In 2003, Bock was part of the SA Under-21 side to go to England for the Under-21 Rugby Championship and scored a staggering nine tries in five matches. That same year, the speedster was included in the SA Sevens team that went to the Hong Kong Sevens tournament.

In 2013, Bock was included in the SA President’s XV that played in the Tbilisi Cup, scoring two tries in three matches.

Kick-off for the Southern Kings match against the Cell C Sharks is at 19h30.
